Apple Cinnamon Oatmeal!

GF, DF, Nut-Free, Vegan, Vegetarian, Sugar Free

Oats are the only grain that my body really loves! I feel physically and mentally inflamed when I eat all other grains. Check out this study that agrees!

Oats feed your soul and nourish your body!

This delicious Oatmeal recipe is easy, fast and nourishing! This recipe has my three key items to make it delicious, healthy and nourishing! Those three things are PROTEIN, FIBER, and FAT! The protein comes from the oats, the collagen and the protein powder. These beautiful little building blocks are essential so we can keep repairing and healing damage from environmental toxins, injuries, disease, stress, lack of sleep and inflammation. The fiber comes from the oats, the apple and the chia seeds. These help keep you regular while eliminating toxins and waste products. Fiber is also essential for the health of our gastrointestinal tracts and to feed our healthy gut bacteria. The fat comes from the coconut oil! Oh this beautiful saturated fat is so healthy and nourishing for all of our body systems, especially our endocrine system (hormonal system).

Why is this recipe so awesome?!
1. Organic, Gluten-Free, Sprouted Oats
It is really important to always buy organic grains and grain products, including oats! Conventionally grown grains are sprayed with many different herbicides and pesticides that are not washed off the grain before they are ground into flour. These herbicides and pesticides have numerous negative effects on our health and affect each of our body systems. Visit EWG for more information on conventional vs. organic foods. Sprouting your grains, nuts and seeds unlocks nutrients, improves the digestibility and deactivates the anti-nutrient components that Dr.Gundry is always talking about (well one of them, lectins).
2. Chia Seeds
Ch-ch-ch-chia! Not chia pets… chia seeds, the superfood! They are an amazing source of fiber, protein, calcium, zinc and omega-3’s! Zinc is so beneficial for our immune system and for healthy testosterone levels in men. Omega-3’s are the anti-inflammatory essential fatty acid. Omega-9 is also essential but when we have too much it is inflammatory. The average person in Canada (before working with a Holistic Nutritionist) has a ratio of 20:1 (omega-9 to omega-3’s). This ratio is very important and plays a large role in whether we are inflamed or not! The healthy/optimal ratio is between 4:1 and 1:1 (omega-9 to omega-3).
3. Apple
“An apple a day, keeps the doctor away”. This old saying has been around for ages for a reason! Apples are loaded with phytochemicals, fiber, and vitamin C. These three beautiful components make apples very nourishing to your body!
4. Ceylon Cinnamon
Ceylon cinnamon is known as “true” cinnamon. This warming spice has many health properties but is most known for its ability to help with blood sugar balance. This is not just important for people with diabetes but for everyone. Unbalanced blood sugar causes energy highs and lows, irritability, moodiness, sugar cravings, refined carb cravings, increases inflammation and puts a lot of strain on your pancreas! Keeping your blood sugar balanced can have a huge impact on how you feel every day.
5. Zero Sugar!
This actually means ZERO sugar or sweetener, natural or not! I love creating recipes that are naturally sweet (without any added sugar). There is nothing wrong with natural, raw sugar but I believe it is more wholesome when the sweetness comes from a whole food. The whole food has all the co-factors to not spike your blood sugar. This recipe includes half of a mashed ripe banana and gives it just the perfect amount of sweetness!

I hope you enjoy this beautiful warming and nourishing oatmeal! It is one of my favorites and I love to have it on weekends in the winter!

Servings 1 person

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup Organic, Gluten Free, Sprouted Oats
  • 1/2 cup Filtered Water
  • 1 scoop Protein Powder or Collagen I add both!
  • 1 tbsp Chia Seeds
  • 1 Organic Gala Apple
  • 2 tsp Coconut Oil
  • 1 tbsp Ceylon Cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Nutmeg
  • 1/2 tsp Ground Cloves
  • 1/2 Ripe Banana
  • Unlimited Toppings! See Notes for Topping Ideas!
  • Splash Dairy Free Milk I use unsweetened coconut milk

Instructions

  • Add the oats and filtered water to a small pot and cook on medium heat. Reduce heat if it begins to boil. You want the pot of oats to be just below a simmer. You have to stir often to ensure they do not stick to the bottom of the pot. The oats are done when there is no water left in the pot.
  • Add chia seeds, collagen and/or protein powder to the pot of oats.
  • Warm a cast iron pan with coconut oil. Dice the apple and add to a bowl with all of the spices. Toss the apples in the spices until fully coated. Once coated, add to the cast iron pan and allow to cook for 3-5 minutes. Stir occasionally. Cook for less time to make the apples crispier or cook for longer to make the apples softer.
  • Mash a half banana in a bowl and add cooked oats and sauteed spiced apples to the bowl.
  • Add your favorite toppings and a splash of your dairy free milk.
  • Mix together and enjoy!
